Aging: What You Need To Understand

Growing old is a certain reality in people’s life cycle, but it still falls under the category of people’s unknown and potentially feared processes. In the course of our life, we find ourselves emphasizing different negative aspects related to a stereotype and constantly fearing the loss of youth and vigor. But what if, we were to turn our understanding on its head and start looking at the process of aging simply as another chance to grow, gain new experiences and gain knowledge? The purpose of this article is to demystify the process of aging and to lay the ground work on how one could find purpose and meaning in the process.

The Truth About Aging

1. Growing old is as normal a process as any and it certainly has not been clinically categorized as any form of sickness.

Before going deeper, it is crucial to accept that aging is a normal part of the human body functioning. It has always been a wonder to me that one is born, grows, develops, and dies – that’s life. Not only that but, in many cultures aging is considered as privilege, and symbolizes success. Unfortunately, aging is not something that many people look forward to, or even accept, and it is this very attitude that they should change; aging is an entirely natural process, and everyone must grow old one day.

2. Physiological change process is not solely equivalent to aging.

However, it’s worth noting that when most people finally think of the aging process and give a description to what they think it is which aren’t much more than wrinkles, grey hair, poor muscle tone and so forth, they don’t realize it’s a lot more than that. People’s thinking changes, the information is updated, and our identity is formed year after year. Apart from that, with the development of age and education, people develop and grow their skills and expand their knowledge on themselves and extramural world.

3. Ageism is a major issue

Discriminating between the elder and the younger generation, ageism in the society is practice of Ageism also known as Prejudice on the basis of age. This can hence also lead to reinforce discrimination on the elderly population, discouraging the elderly population to apply for care, as well as to deprive the elderly population from the community. Fighting this issue is very important along with supporting the aging as well as get at ageisms and prejudices towards elderly people.

Embracing the Journey

1. Celebrate your uniqueness

Something we love is the ability to better look at this year as an opportunity to cultivate a positive attitude towards aging and to accept the fact that everyone is amazing in his or her way. Instead of aspiring or settling for what society dictates, or wanting to be somebody that we are not, we can actually embrace ourselves as we are, and learn to respect life stages as they are.

2. Cultivate a growth mindset

A growth mindset also plays a part in acceptance of aging, because you learn to embrace the new knowledge or experience as you grow old. I have learned that intelligence and passion, as well as approach to learning, can be followed and further developed at any time in life.

3. Become and remain relevant and purposeful relationships.

Of course, having social connectedness is important regardless of our age, but especially as we age we need to have people in our lives to take care of us. Getting in touch with friends, family and members of the community will go along way to ensure people feel wanted, are able to support themselves and find meaning in their lives.

4. You need emotional, physical and mental health and it is important to ensure that you take good care of yourself.

Looking after ourselves when we are older becomes more relevant than it ever was in our youths. We’ve a great chance to stay healthy and remain fully functional for as long as possible if we’re constantly seen to exercise, go on proper diet and minimize stress.

Conclusion

Through our analysis, consequently, we can herald that aging is something natural that people should look forward to and not necessarily dread. If we are willing to work to overcome self schemas, accept personal growth, cultivate warm relationships, and practice self care then aging can be experienced as an asset and not a disease. Accepting the process of aging means understanding what each stage of a person’s life has to offer and how this potential can be used in order create a meaningful, happy and satisfying life.
